Product Description
Marine Electric Vertical Anchor Capstan Windlass with Warping Head | 12.5–40 mm Chain
Product Overview
This marine electric vertical anchor capstan is a compact anchoring deck machine combining a vertical chain gypsy (cable lifter) with a warping head. The chain gypsy is used for paying out and heaving in the anchor chain, while the warping head provides a separate working surface for handling mooring ropes. The vertical-shaft arrangement is well suited to vessels where deck footprint and rope-handling access are important, with the final motor, gearbox, foundation and control arrangement engineered to the vessel layout.
For selection, the key inputs are not motor power alone. Chain diameter and grade, anchor mass, maximum anchorage depth, required continuous working pull, chain hoisting speed, chain-stopper arrangement, power supply and deck foundation all affect the final configuration. ISO 4568:2021 includes anchor capstans as a defined windlass type for sea-going vessels; project-specific classification rules and flag requirements remain applicable.
Quick Specifications

Selection note: chain diameters 22 to 34 mm appear twice with different working loads and warping-head diameters. The two load groups are retained exactly from the supplied data; the corresponding chain-grade designation must be confirmed from the original manufacturer drawing or chain specification before the table is published as a final selection chart.
Chain & Working Load Selection
• Match the chain gypsy to the actual anchor-chain diameter, link geometry and chain grade. A nominal diameter match alone is not sufficient for reliable seating and load transfer.
• Confirm anchor mass and maximum anchorage depth. These inputs affect the continuous duty pull required from the electric drive and should be included in the quotation data.
• Confirm whether a chain stopper is fitted and how the chain is led through the hawse pipe and chain pipe. Brake, holding and support-structure requirements depend on the complete anchoring arrangement.
• Do not use the anchor-capstan working load as a mooring-rope SWL or lifting capacity. If a specified warping-head line pull is required, it should be stated separately and confirmed by the manufacturer.
Drive, Brake & Control Arrangement
• Electric drive: electric motor and reduction gearing transmit torque to the vertical shaft and chain gypsy; motor voltage, frequency, duty rating, enclosure and starting/control method are project-specific.
• Clutch / coupling: the chain gypsy should be capable of being disengaged from the drive for controlled anchor handling; the exact clutch type and manual operating arrangement are to be confirmed on the GA drawing.
• Brake: provides controlled chain pay-out and holding function. Required brake capacity is determined by the chain-cable strength and whether a chain stopper is fitted, subject to the selected class rule.
• Warping head: provides a smooth rotating surface for heaving or tending mooring rope. It is not a rope-storage drum and should not be described as an automatic mooring winch.
• Controls and protection: local controls, emergency stop, motor protection, overload protection and weather-exposed electrical protection should be specified to the vessel electrical standard and classification requirement.
Installation & Deck Integration
• Foundation and under-deck reinforcement should be checked against the transmitted anchoring loads, brake loads, motor torque and local deck structure before installation.
• The gypsy centreline must align with the hawse pipe and chain pipe so the chain seats correctly on the pockets and runs without abnormal side loading.
• If a chain stopper is used, its position and load path should be coordinated with the windlass/capstan foundation and deck reinforcement.
• Allow service clearance around the warping head, brake, clutch, motor/reducer and inspection points. Final motor location and access arrangement are to be confirmed by project GA.
• Corrosion-protection system, drainage, cable routing and exposed electrical enclosure should be selected for the actual deck environment.
Selection & Inquiry Guide
Step 1: Confirm equipment function: vertical electric anchor capstan with chain gypsy plus warping head; state whether the warping head is required for routine mooring rope handling.
Step 2: Provide anchor-chain diameter, chain grade, chain certificate or link dimensions, anchor mass and maximum anchorage depth.
Step 3: Confirm required working pull, chain hoisting speed, warping-head line pull if specified, warping speed and whether a chain stopper is fitted.
Step 4: Provide ship power supply, motor starting/control requirement, local or remote control scope, hazardous-area requirement if any, and requested IP / insulation class if specified.
Step 5: Confirm material and coating system, deck foundation arrangement, hawse-pipe / chain-pipe geometry, installation position and required classification society.
Step 6: Provide quantity, delivery destination, required delivery time, vessel type and GA / deck arrangement drawing for final technical confirmation.

Engineering & Quality Advantages
• Combined anchor-chain and warping functions reduce the need for separate deck machines where a compact vertical arrangement is preferred.
• Chain-grade-based selection links the motor and drivetrain duty to the actual chain cable rather than selecting by motor power alone.
• Brake and clutch functions are treated separately from the drive so anchor pay-out, heaving and holding conditions can be evaluated as distinct operating cases.
• Foundation, hawse-pipe alignment and chain-stopper interface are included in the engineering review, reducing the risk of poor chain seating or an incomplete deck load path.
• Electric configuration supports straightforward integration with the vessel electrical system; final motor enclosure, protection and control logic are selected for the actual installation environment.
• Inspection and testing scope can be defined at quotation stage, including material traceability, functional tests, load/performance verification and class witnessing when required.

How It Works
Release / control brake and clutch as required → Pay out anchor chain through gypsy and hawse pipe → Engage drive for heaving → Electric motor and gearbox rotate the gypsy → Chain is recovered through the chain pipe → Brake / chain stopper secures the anchoring system; warping head is used separately for mooring rope handling

FAQ
Q1: What is the difference between this anchor capstan and a normal mooring capstan?
A1: This unit includes a chain gypsy / cable lifter for anchor-chain handling and a warping head for rope handling. A normal mooring capstan without a chain gypsy is intended only for mooring rope work and should not be specified as an anchor windlass.
Q2: Why do some chain diameters appear twice with different working loads in the supplied table?
A2: Anchor-windlass continuous duty pull depends on chain diameter and chain grade. The supplied data contain two different load groups for 22–34 mm chain. The exact grade designation should be confirmed from the original chain specification before final publication or quotation.
Q3: What information is required to select the correct electric vertical anchor capstan?
A3: Provide chain diameter and grade, anchor mass, maximum anchorage depth, required working pull and speed, chain-stopper arrangement, power supply, control requirement, class society, deck layout and hawse-pipe / chain-pipe arrangement.
