Product Description

Shipside Hydraulic Watertight Pilot Door | Flush Folding Shell Door

Product Overview

The shipside hydraulic watertight pilot door is a flush-closing shell opening used to provide a controlled passage between the pilot boarding position and the vessel interior. The assembly is normally integrated into the side shell within the approved pilot transfer arrangement and may be supplied as port and starboard units where the vessel design requires boarding access on both sides.

The supplied PWTD arrangement combines a bi-fold door body, hydraulic cylinders, hydraulic power unit, locking cleats, resilient sealing gasket, and a pilot ladder stowage reel. In the closed position, the external surface is arranged flush with the surrounding shell plating. During boarding, the door opens inboard, folds to reduce its stowed envelope, and is mechanically secured clear of the access route. Final design must coordinate shell reinforcement, door loads, sealing pressure, hydraulic controls, pilot ladder securing points, safe handholds, alarms, emergency operation, and class approval.

Quick Specifications

• Product type: Hydraulic folding shipside pilot door → provides a flush shell closure and an inboard pilot transfer passage.

• Clear opening range: 2,000 × 2,000 to 3,000 × 3,000 mm → five PWTD sizes for different vessel access and internal stowage layouts.

• Door arrangement: Bi-fold inboard-opening leaf → reduces the space required to stow the open door against the adjacent internal structure.

• Sealing system: Resilient perimeter gasket compressed by locking cleats → watertight performance depends on uniform contact, frame alignment, and controlled cleat adjustment.

• Hydraulic system: Cylinders, hydraulic power unit, valves, and local controls → remote indication, remote operation, emergency hand pump, and interlocks are project-specific.

• Pilot access equipment: Ladder reel and pilot ladder interface → the reel is for stowage and handling; the ladder must be secured to independent approved strong points when in use.

• Primary material: Shipbuilding mild steel → stainless steel or aluminium construction requires separate structural, welding, corrosion, and fire-safety review.

• Approval basis: Approved vessel drawing, applicable class rules, shell-opening requirements, and pilot transfer regulations → certificate and test scope must be agreed before production.

*PWTD4 overall width is stated as 3,516 mm in the supplied table, while the stated formula B + 1,018 gives 3,518 mm. The approved drawing must confirm the correct value before quotation or production.

Selection & Inquiry Guide

Step 1: Confirm the door location, port or starboard orientation, freeboard-deck relationship, sill height, access deck level, design draughts, trim conditions, and pilot boat approach area.

Step 2: Select the clear opening from PWTD1 to PWTD5 and verify compliance with the applicable pilot transfer rules. For projects subject to IMO resolution MSC.576(110), the side opening requires at least 2,200 mm clear height and 915 mm clear width.

Step 3: Provide the shell structure and installation drawing showing opening compensation, rounded corners, frames, stringers, foundation structure, adjacent bulkhead, drainage, and available folding / ladder-reel stowage space.

Step 4: Confirm the hydraulic scope: local control, remote control, open / closed indication, cleat or locking indication, emergency manual operation, power supply, hydraulic pressure, environmental rating, and control philosophy.

Step 5: Confirm material, gasket, corrosion-protection system, weld details, cleat arrangement, anti-piracy or security locking requirement, ladder reel, handholds, strong points, lighting, and any project-specific interlocks.

Step 6: Confirm watertight test pressure or head, hose / air / chalk test requirements, hydraulic circuit testing, functional test, class witnessing, certificate scope, quantity, destination, and required delivery time.

Structure

Flush bi-fold door leaf | Welded shell frame | Structural hinges | Hydraulic cylinders | Hydraulic power unit and valve block | Resilient perimeter gasket | Locking cleats and supports | Open-position securing device | Pilot ladder stowage reel | Independent ladder strong points | Local controls and position indicators

Shell Integration, Sealing & Hydraulic Safety Advantages

• Flush external geometry minimizes protrusion from the side shell when the door is closed and supports a clean pilot-boat approach zone, subject to the vessel’s rubbing-band and shell arrangement.

• The folding leaf reduces the inboard stowage envelope compared with a full-size single-panel door, but hinge loads, folding clearance, and positive open-position securing must be verified on the approved arrangement drawing.

• Door strength, hinges, manoeuvring arms, locking devices, supporting devices, and the surrounding shell structure should be designed as one load path. The rubber gasket provides sealing compression and should not be treated as the primary structural support.

• Rounded shell-opening corners and local compensation using frames, stringers, or equivalent structure help control stress concentration around the large side-shell opening.

• Uniform cleat adjustment and controlled frame flatness improve gasket contact. Replaceable seal sections, drainage of the inner recess, and access for inspection should be considered in the vessel integration design.

• Hydraulic opening and closing can be arranged with controlled sequencing of the door, folding hinges, and cleats. The final system should include the required position indication, alarms, pressure protection, and emergency operating method.

• The pilot ladder reel must not carry the pilot ladder service load during transfer. Dedicated strong points and securing arrangements should be positioned so the ladder remains clear, vertical, and protected from sharp edges and chafing.

• Watertight, weathertight, gastight, acoustic, and fire-rated performance are separate design and approval conditions. They should not be combined as default claims without the applicable drawing, test method, and type approval.

Custom Attributes

• Product Series: PWTD1 / PWTD2 / PWTD3 / PWTD4 / PWTD5 → select by clear opening, shell arrangement, and applicable pilot transfer requirements.

• Door Form: Flush bi-fold inboard-opening shell door → reduces internal stowage width while keeping the external shell surface flush when closed.

• Primary Duty: Watertight pilot access → actual design pressure, immersion head, sill position, and operational restrictions are to be confirmed.

• Operation: Hydraulic cylinders and HPU → local / remote operation, emergency hand pump, and control redundancy according to project requirement.

• Sealing: Resilient rubber gasket with locking cleats → gasket profile, material, compression, joint details, and spare seal scope to be confirmed.

• Pilot Ladder Interface: Stowage reel plus independent strong points → reel arrangement must not obstruct the access route or support the ladder during use.

• Material: Shipbuilding steel as the normal basis → stainless steel or aluminium requires separate structural and joining review.

• Reference Standards: CB 672 / CB/T 3007 / other project standards → applicability must be confirmed because these references cover different watertight-door types and are not automatically the governing design standard for a folding shipside pilot door.

• Security Option: Anti-piracy or controlled-access locking → to be coordinated with emergency access, operating procedures, flag requirements, and the vessel security plan.

How It Works

Confirm safe boarding condition → Release locking cleats in the approved sequence → Hydraulic cylinders open and fold the door inboard → Secure the folded leaf in the open position → Rig and independently secure the pilot ladder and access equipment → Complete pilot transfer → Recover and stow the ladder → Unsecure, unfold, and close the door → Engage cleats uniformly → Confirm closed and locked indication

Applications

Pilot boarding stations | Research vessels | Offshore support vessels | Large cargo vessels | Passenger vessels | Special-purpose ships | Port and starboard shell access positions | Newbuilding and approved retrofit projects

FAQ

Q1: Which PWTD sizes are suitable for future IMO pilot-transfer requirements?

A1: IMO resolution MSC.576(110) specifies a minimum shipside opening clearance of 2,200 mm in height and 915 mm in width for arrangements within its application. PWTD2 to PWTD5 exceed this minimum based on the supplied clear dimensions. PWTD1 has a 2,000 mm clear height and therefore requires project-specific review for installation date, vessel applicability, flag Administration, class, and the approved arrangement.

Q2: Does the hydraulic ladder reel support the pilot ladder while personnel are boarding?

A2: No. The reel is used for storage and controlled handling. During transfer, the pilot ladder must be secured to independent approved strong points, and the access route must remain unobstructed. The reel, door edges, hinges, and other fittings must not introduce chafing, pinching, or unsafe bends.

Q3: What tests should be specified for a shipside hydraulic watertight pilot door?

A3: The purchase specification should separate structural and watertight testing from hydraulic-system and functional testing. Typical agreed checks may include material and welding inspection, dimensional inspection, hydraulic circuit pressure and leakage testing, opening / folding / closing sequence tests, emergency-operation tests, position-indication tests, gasket contact checks, and the class-required hose, air, or pressure test. Fire and gas-tightness tests apply only to separately approved performance configurations.
