Product Description

Five-Roller Universal Fairlead | ISO 13733 Type 5RL / 5RR for Ship Mooring and Towing

Product Overview

The ISO 13733 Type 5RL / 5RR five-roller universal fairlead is a welded shipboard rope-guiding fitting with one four-roller rope-passing opening and one additional vertical guide roller on the left or right side. It is installed at a designed mooring or towing station to lead the line between the inboard deck arrangement and the outboard direction while controlling side entry and reducing sliding contact against fixed steel edges.

Type 5RL and Type 5RR are mirror configurations. The correct hand must be confirmed against the vessel general arrangement, the standard viewing direction, and the actual line approach. Nominal size is referenced to the outside diameter of the main roller; suffixes A, B, and C identify different SWL configurations with the same roller diameter. The standard strength basis uses reference wire-rope diameters, while actual rope construction, MBL, bend-radius requirement, line lead, and approved on-board SWL remain project-specific.

Quick Specifications

• Type: ISO 13733 Type 5RL / 5RR → one rope-passing opening with an additional guide roller on the left or right side.

• Nominal sizes: 140 / 160 / 180 / 200 / 250 / 300A / 300B / 400A / 400B / 400C → nominal size follows the main roller outside diameter series.

• Reference SWL: 137 to 1373 kN (14 to 140 t) → the actual on-board SWL must consider the foundation and under-deck reinforcement and must not exceed the standard rating.

• Reference wire-rope diameter: 14 to 44 mm → used as the standard load-assessment basis, not as automatic confirmation for every rope construction.

• Calculated 5R weight: 194 to 2516 kg → important for shipyard handling, foundation design, lifting arrangements, packing, and freight planning.

• Fabricated structure: weldable steel plate or tube rollers, carbon-steel axles, and brass or bronze bushes → component grades are selected to meet the specified strength basis.

• Load direction: horizontal and vertical load cases are assessed separately for Type 5RL / 5RR → actual line lead angles must be confirmed from the mooring and towing plan.

• Surface treatment: Sa 2.5 blasting with epoxy shop primer as a typical supply basis → final coating, galvanizing, or stainless-steel finishing is subject to project specification.

Selection & Inquiry Guide

Step 1: Confirm Type 5RL or Type 5RR and mark the viewing direction on the vessel drawing; do not select the hand only from port or starboard wording.

Step 2: Provide service duty, rope type, diameter, construction, MBL, rope manufacturer, minimum bend-radius guidance, and expected horizontal and vertical lead angles.

Step 3: Select nominal size and reference SWL. For 300A / 300B and 400A / 400B / 400C, confirm the required rating because the roller diameter is shared but plate thickness, weld size, and weight differ.

Step 4: Provide the installation position, seat height, foundation, under-deck reinforcement, welding access, load-transfer arrangement, and approved mooring or towing plan.

Step 5: Confirm frame and roller material grades, axle and bush materials, minimum design temperature, lubrication arrangement, surface preparation, and final coating system.

Step 6: Confirm quantity, classification and inspection scope, vessel type, drawing or photo, delivery destination, and required delivery time.

Structure

Welded frame with rope guide | Two vertical main rollers | Lower horizontal roller | Upper horizontal roller | Additional left-side or right-side guide roller | Carbon-steel axles | Brass or bronze bushes | Greasing points | Welded shipboard foundation

Roller, Load Transfer and Quality Advantages

• The five-roller arrangement combines a closed four-roller rope-passing opening with one additional side guide roller, helping control an oblique line approach before the rope enters the main opening.

• Type 5RL and Type 5RR provide mirror-image handing. Confirming the correct hand from the approved GA drawing prevents the added roller from being placed on the wrong side of the incoming line.

• The A / B / C suffixes allow higher SWL options without changing the main roller diameter. Higher-rated variants use different structural thicknesses, weld sizes, and calculated weights rather than a simple relabeling.

• Rollers may be fabricated from suitable steel tubes or formed plate. Rope-contact surfaces, roller edges, and weld-adjacent areas are finished to avoid roughness or irregularities likely to abrade the line.

• Rotating parts are provided with greasing, and grease nipples should be recessed so that lubrication hardware does not become a rope-damage point.

• The fairlead frame, welded foundation, and under-deck structure act as one load path. The shipyard foundation and welding arrangement must transfer the approved maximum load without plastic deformation or cracking.

• For Type 5RL / 5RR, horizontal and vertical load cases form separate strength-assessment cases. They should not be represented as a combined simultaneous standard load case unless a project-specific analysis requires it.

Custom Attributes

• Standard: ISO 13733 → reference for universal fairleads with upper roller(s), nominal sizes, dimensions, SWL, construction, inspection, and marking.

• Type: 5RL / 5RR → one rope-passing opening plus an additional guide roller on the left or right side.

• Nominal Size: 140 to 400C → based on main roller outside diameter; letter suffixes distinguish different SWL levels.

• Reference SWL: 14 / 20 / 25 / 32 / 52 / 70 / 75 / 100 / 128 / 140 t → actual installed SWL is subject to the approved foundation and on-board plan.

• Reference Rope Diameter: 14.0 to 44.0 mm wire rope → load-assessment reference only; synthetic rope selection requires separate bend-radius and contact review.

• Material Basis: Weldable steel frame and rollers / carbon-steel axles / brass or bronze bushes → exact grades and low-temperature properties to be confirmed by project.

• Surface Treatment: Sa 2.5 blasting + epoxy shop primer / project coating / galvanized or stainless option → compatibility with rotating fits and lubrication points must be confirmed.

• Inspection and Certification: Available according to project requirement → class witnessing, NDT, material traceability, coating inspection, and certificate scope must be agreed before production.

How It Works

Line approaches the fairlead → Additional left or right guide roller controls side entry → Vertical and horizontal rollers form the rope-passing path → Rollers turn to reduce sliding abrasion → Frame transfers the line reaction through the welded foundation into the reinforced ship structure

Applications

Merchant-vessel mooring stations | Tug and workboat rope-leading positions | Harbor towing arrangements subject to approved vessel plan | Deck-edge and ship-side fairlead stations | Newbuilding projects | Replacement projects with confirmed dimensions and handing

Certifications & Advantages

Certificates can be arranged according to project requirement, inspection scope, material traceability, and classification society approval procedure.

Certification: CCS, NK, BV, ABS, DNV, LR, KR, IRS, RS, RINA, CRS, Makers Test Certificate.

FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between Type 5RL and Type 5RR?

A1: Both types have one four-roller rope-passing opening and one additional guide roller. Type 5RL places the added roller on the left side and Type 5RR on the right side as defined by the standard view. The vessel GA and actual rope approach should identify the required hand.

Q2: How should 300A / 300B or 400A / 400B / 400C be selected?

A2: The lettered variants share the same main roller diameter and principal envelope dimensions but have different structural thicknesses, welding-leg requirements, reference SWL, and calculated weight. Select the suffix from the approved design load and installation structure, not from roller diameter alone.

Q3: Is the table SWL automatically the SWL of the installed shipboard fairlead?

A3: No. The standard rating is the upper reference for the fitting. The actual on-board SWL must be determined with the foundation, welds, under-deck reinforcement, and intended line lead, then marked in the towing and mooring plan without exceeding the applicable standard SWL.
