Product Description

Offshore Gravity Luffing Lifeboat Davit – 205 kN Launching Load

Product Overview

The offshore gravity luffing lifeboat davit is designed for launching and recovering large totally enclosed lifeboats on offshore units and sea-going vessels. The documented project configuration has been applied on an offshore pipelay accommodation work barge, where the davit is combined with an electric recovery winch and a large-capacity totally enclosed lifeboat. The davit uses gravity for swing-out and lowering, while the winch provides powered recovery. The lifeboat can be boarded in the stowed position, and swing-out and lowering are arranged as a continuous launching operation.

The documented davit configuration has a maximum launching load of 205 kN, a maximum hoisting load of 90 kN, and a minimum launching load of 60 kN. The matched electric lifeboat winch has separate approved ratings, including a maximum working load of 170 kN and a hoisting load of 120 kN. The davit and winch must therefore be selected and certified as separate load-rated components within the same launching system, even when they are supplied as one matched package.

Structure & Components

The documented 205DL system includes two gravity-luffing davit arms together with boat supports, fastening units, gripe-lashing arrangements, limit units, skates, remote-control arrangements, struts and platforms. The project technical package also contains the DW170S winch general arrangement, winch base, electrical connection diagram, control box and remote push-button arrangement. Frame and davit-arm material are identified in the project specification as steel; the winch casing is steel, while gears are specified as carbon/chromium steel.

Drive & Control

Launching is gravity-operated. From the stowed position, the crew can release and control the winch brake through the remote-control arrangement from inside the lifeboat, while deck operation of the hand brake is also provided. Recovery is powered by the electric winch. The documented project specification includes a one-way brake, disc-type axial friction clutch and a manual hoisting crank with a safety device.

In the 130-person offshore project configuration, the DW170S winch uses a 415 V, 50 Hz, three-phase supply with a 28 kW YZ225S-6-H motor, IP56 protection and Class F insulation. A separate 150-person MED specification on file shows a 440 V, 60 Hz, three-phase / 31.5 kW project option marked 'to be advised', so electrical data must be confirmed against the final project configuration rather than treated as one universal rating.

Key Engineering Advantages

The engineering value of this system is the matched load path from a large totally enclosed lifeboat through the 11.30 m fall arrangement to a 205 kN davit and separately rated electric winch. The 130-person offshore project package documents an 18,725 kg fully loaded 150F, while the 150-person technical package documents a 20,375 kg fully loaded 150F. This allows the final launching system to be selected from the actual approved boat load rather than from passenger count alone.

The davit approval also makes an important boundary clear: the 205DL design approval is for the davit only. The winch must be an approved matched type, and shipboard foundation, deck support, installation and power connections are subject to project-specific review.

Inspection & Documentation

The technical package includes approved/general arrangement drawings, component drawings, electrical diagrams and a davit FAT report. The FAT material on file includes swing-out, hoisting/recovery and dynamic-load testing, including a documented 1.1 × 205 kN dynamic-load test condition. For service in operation, maintenance, thorough examination, operational testing, overhaul and repair should follow the applicable statutory requirements and the manufacturer's approved instructions.

Selection & Inquiry Guide

1. Provide the lifeboat model, approved fully loaded launching weight and hook span. Do not select the davit only from the nominal passenger capacity.

2. Confirm installation height and the distance from davit head to the waterline at the lightest seagoing condition; this affects lowering requirements.

3. Confirm vessel or offshore-unit arrangement, deck/foundation interface, available power supply and required motor configuration.

4. Confirm class, flag and statutory certification requirements, including whether unit certification and witnessed testing are required.

5. For replacement projects, provide the existing davit, winch, boat, foundation and fall arrangement drawings so compatibility can be checked.

Applications

The 205DL is used for large davit-launched lifeboat systems. A documented project package applies the 205DL with DW170S to an 150F lifeboat on a pipelay accommodation work barge, providing direct evidence for offshore-project use. The available ABS davit approval itself identifies the intended service as lifeboat launching and recovery on ships; offshore-project suitability should therefore be confirmed against the actual vessel/unit, class and flag requirements.

FAQ

Q1. Is 205 kN the winch load? No. 205 kN is the davit's maximum launching/working load. The matched DW170S has its own ratings; ABS lists 170 kN maximum working load and 120 kN hoisting load.

Q2. Can the 205DL be used for both 130-person and 150-person 150F configurations? Both configurations are documented in the available technical packages, but the final arrangement must be checked against the actual approved fully loaded boat weight, hook span, lowering height and project certification.

Q3. Does the 205DL approval automatically cover the DW170S winch and shipboard installation? No. The ABS approval explicitly treats 205DL as a davit-only assessment. The winch has separate approval, and shipboard support, foundation and power connections require project-specific review.
