Product Overview
Flash butt welded offshore mooring chain is supplied for permanent or temporary position-mooring systems used by floating offshore units and offshore loading facilities. Typical project applications include FPSO and FSO mooring systems, floating production units, mobile offshore drilling units, single-point moorings, offshore buoys, and other floating offshore structures. Each chain order must be defined by nominal diameter, link configuration, grade, continuous length, end connection arrangement, specified test loads, design service, and classification requirement.
We supply the chain through qualified chain manufacturers and coordinate the technical and documentation scope; the page does not present the chain as in-house manufacture. The approved production route normally uses rolled alloy-steel bar, hot link forming, flash butt welding, and controlled heat treatment, followed by dimensional inspection, proof loading, sample break testing, mechanical testing, and nondestructive examination according to the selected class rule and approved manufacturing procedure. Long-term seawater service also requires project-specific review of corrosion allowance, fatigue, wear, out-of-plane bending, seabed interaction, cathodic protection, and inspection strategy.

Mooring Chain Selection & Inquiry Guide
Step 1: Define the offshore application: FPSO, FSO, floating production unit, drilling unit, buoy, single-point mooring, temporary spread, or other floating structure; state design life, water depth, and chain segment location.
Step 2: Confirm nominal diameter, stud link or studless configuration, chain grade, required continuous length, number of chain lengths, and end link / accessory arrangement.
Step 3: Provide the project design basis or specified proof and break test loads. Break test load is a manufacturing acceptance value and must not be used as an operating SWL.
Step 4: Confirm corrosion allowance, coating requirement, cathodic-protection interface, seabed contact, wear zones, fatigue or out-of-plane bending assessment, and in-service inspection philosophy.
Step 5: Confirm classification society, applicable rule edition, approved manufacturer requirement, survey witnessing, NDE scope, marking, traceability, and documentation package.
Step 6: Provide quantity, delivery destination, required delivery time, packing / handling requirement, chain layout, interface drawings, and any approved vendor list or project specification.

Manufacturing, Testing & Supply Advantages
- Supply is coordinated through qualified chain factories, allowing the quotation to be aligned with approved diameter, grade, heat-treatment route, testing capacity, and classification scope.
- Flash butt welding closes the chain link itself; stud attachment, when used, is a separate detail and must follow the approved grade-specific construction and welding restrictions.
- Bar heating, flash-welding parameters, heat treatment, dimensional checks, and test results should remain traceable to the continuous chain length and certificate package.
- The complete chain length is proof loaded according to the applicable requirement, while break testing is performed on representative specimens at the prescribed sampling frequency.
- Visual inspection and NDE focus on link surfaces and the flash-weld region. MT, UT, or other approved methods, acceptance criteria, and survey witnessing are defined by the selected class rule.
- A higher material grade is not an automatic substitute for a lower grade. Manufacturer approval, material specification, link design, welding parameters, heat treatment, and tests are grade-specific.
- For permanent moorings, selection should address fatigue, corrosion loss, interlink wear, out-of-plane bending, seabed interaction, and integrity-management planning rather than tensile grade alone.
- Certificate wording and documentation are agreed before production, reducing the risk of mismatch between the purchase order, approved manufacturer scope, class survey plan, and final chain certificate.

A1: Studless chain is commonly considered for permanent mooring systems with a defined design life and installation plan. Stud link chain may be selected where handling stability, chain-wheel compatibility, or the approved project arrangement requires a studded geometry. The final choice must be made by the mooring designer and accepted by the selected classification society.
Q2: Can the published break load be treated as the chain operating capacity or SWL?
