Product Overview

The 50 mm Grade 3 electric anchor windlass is a horizontal-shaft shipboard anchoring machine designed to pay out, recover and control stud-link anchor chain through a single cable lifter (gypsy). The supplied arrangement combines one cable lifter with a single rope drum and a warping head on one deck-machinery foundation. Anchoring remains the primary duty; the rope drum and warping head should be specified separately if they are required to perform formal mooring-winch or auxiliary rope-handling functions.

The source model family covers 50, 52 and 54 mm IACS Grade 3 chain. Final selection is not based on chain diameter alone: the certified chain grade and link geometry, anchor mass, maximum anchorage depth, chain-stopper arrangement, brake holding basis, electric supply, control philosophy, deck layout, foundation reactions and classification requirements must be confirmed before the motor, gearbox, cable lifter and brake arrangement are approved.

Selection & Inquiry Guide

Step 1: Confirm 50 mm Grade 3 as the primary selection, or 52 / 54 mm if applicable, and provide the anchor-chain certificate or drawing showing chain standard, pitch, link proportions and tolerances.

Step 2: Confirm anchor mass, chain length, maximum anchorage depth, required continuous working load, short-term / overload duty, brake holding requirement, and whether a separate chain stopper is installed.

Step 3: Define the single rope drum duty: storage only or active mooring; provide rope construction, diameter, length, required drum pull / speed, working-layer basis and drum brake requirement. Confirm the 50 kN warping-head duty separately.

Anchor Handling, Brake & Drive Engineering

  • The cable lifter must be matched to the exact Grade 3 stud-link chain geometry, not only the nominal diameter. Chain pitch, link width, stud geometry and manufacturing tolerances affect pocket engagement and wear.
  • Windlass working load and brake holding load are different engineering values. The working load is the continuous anchoring pull from the drive system, while the holding load is the static load resisted by the cable-lifter brake under the approved securing arrangement.
  • The brake, clutch and chain stopper perform different functions. Where a separate chain stopper is fitted, the windlass brake basis may be lower than for a windlass required to hold the chain without a stopper; the final arrangement must follow class approval.
  • Electric motor and gearbox selection should be checked against continuous pull, short-term overload pull, chain speed, starting torque, transmission efficiency and operating duty. The source 30 / 30 / 22 kW notation should not be treated as a universal fixed rating without the motor datasheet.
  • The single rope drum does not automatically make every unit a certified mooring winch. If the drum is used to manoeuvre, hold and store a mooring rope, its pull, speed, capacity, brake and applicable ISO 3730 / class requirements must be specified separately.
  • Foundation design should account for anchor-chain forces, brake reactions, machine torque, rope-drum loads where applicable and local deck structure. Foundation reactions and bolt / weld details should come from the approved maker GA and vessel structural design.
  • Factory acceptance and class witnessing can be arranged according to the approved inspection plan. Functional running, speed, load, brake, clutch, electrical and documentation checks should follow the project standard and agreed class scope.

Q1: Why are the Grade 3 working load and brake holding load different?

A1: The windlass working load is the continuous pull delivered by the drive system for anchoring duty, while the brake holding load is a static chain load resisted by the cable-lifter brake. The required holding basis also changes with the chain-stopper arrangement, so the two values must not be interchanged.

Q2: Does the single rope drum mean this unit is automatically a mooring winch?

A2: No. The drum may be included for rope storage or working duty, but a formal mooring-winch function must be specified by rope diameter and construction, storage length, drum pull, speed, working layer and brake holding requirement. When it is used as a mooring winch, ISO 3730 and the applicable class rules are additionally relevant.
