Product Description

OCIMF SPM Chafing Chain for Tanker Bow Mooring | 1000–2000 kN

Product Overview

The OCIMF single point mooring chafing chain is fitted at the tanker end of an SPM hawser assembly. During bow mooring, the chain is led through the ship’s bow chock or fairlead and secured by the compatible chain stopper, so the synthetic hawser is not exposed directly to concentrated abrasion at the ship-side rope lead.

This is an SPM bow mooring component, not a general towing or anchor chain. Confirm vessel DWT, SWL, grade, diameter, Type A / Type B, chain length, end connections, fairlead geometry, and chain-stopper compatibility against the applicable OCIMF guidance and approved project drawing.

Quick Specifications

• Application: tanker-end chafing chain for OCIMF single point mooring hawser assemblies → protects the synthetic hawser at the bow rope lead.

• Rated SWL options: 1000 kN (approximately 102 ton-force) and 2000 kN (approximately 204 ton-force) → selected by vessel and terminal mooring design requirements.

• Vessel selection basis: 20,000–50,000 DWT and 50,000 DWT or above, as provided → the exact boundary at 50,000 DWT should be confirmed in the project specification.

• Chain grade options: Grade 1 / Grade 2 / Grade 3 → higher grade permits a smaller nominal diameter for the same listed SWL, subject to approved material and test requirements.

• Nominal chain diameter range: 54–111 mm → must match the selected grade, chain stopper pocket, fairlead opening, and complete hawser assembly.

• Construction: welded chain → link geometry, chain length, end links, and connecting fittings are to be confirmed by drawing.

• Certificate scope: maker, material, test, class, or third-party inspection documents can be arranged according to the purchase specification and agreed inspection plan.

Main Technical Parameters

Main selection table based on the data supplied. Chain diameter is the nominal diameter corresponding to the selected grade and listed SWL.

Ship Deadweight
DWT (ton)

SWL
kN (ton-force)

Grade 1
Dia. (mm)

Grade 2
Dia. (mm)

Grade 3
Dia. (mm)

20,000 ≤ DWT ≤ 50,000 1000 (102) 76 62 54
DWT ≥ 50,000 2000 (204) 111 90 76

Note: The two supplied DWT ranges overlap at exactly 50,000 DWT. Final selection at this boundary, and the correspondence between Type A / Type B and the two load ratings, are to be confirmed against the applicable OCIMF edition or project drawing.

Selection & Inquiry Guide

Step 1: Confirm the operating context: SPM buoy terminal, tanker type, vessel DWT, and the exact OCIMF / terminal / owner specification to be applied.

Step 2: Confirm the required SWL: 1000 kN or 2000 kN. Do not select only by vessel DWT when the terminal mooring analysis or approved vessel drawing specifies another requirement.

Step 3: Confirm Type A / Type B, grade, diameter, overall length, link count, end-link arrangement, connecting fittings, and approved drawing.

Step 4: Check the hawser connection, bow chock / fairlead opening, chain lead, chain-stopper pocket and link engagement, and supporting ship structure.

Step 5: Confirm material, welding and heat treatment, surface protection, required testing, dimensional inspection, traceability, class witnessing, and certificate scope.

Step 6: Provide quantity, vessel or project name, installation drawing or photos, destination, packing requirement, required delivery time, and any replacement-chain identification data.

Structure

Welded chain links | Hawser-side connection arrangement | Bow chock / fairlead contact section | Chain-stopper engagement section | Terminal end connection | Surface protection and identification marking

Mooring, Interface and Quality Advantages

• The chain section takes the direct contact and sliding wear at the tanker bow, reducing concentrated chafing on the synthetic SPM hawser.

• The same listed SWL can require different nominal chain diameters for Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3; grade and diameter therefore have to be selected together rather than independently.

• Chain-stopper compatibility is a primary engineering check. Nominal diameter alone is insufficient without confirming link geometry, pocket engagement, lead direction, and approved vessel arrangement.

• Weld integrity, material traceability, heat treatment, dimensional control, and mechanical testing should follow the agreed manufacturing specification and inspection plan.

• Fairlead and chock contact areas should be checked for smooth rope and chain lead, acceptable alignment, and wear condition to avoid local damage or unintended side loading.

Custom Attributes

Product Category: SPM hawser chafing chain → ship-end wear and load-transfer component for tanker bow mooring.

Reference Basis: OCIMF SPM guidance and project purchase specification → exact edition, drawing, and owner / terminal requirements are to be confirmed.

Model: Type A / Type B → configuration and load-rating correspondence require confirmation from the applicable drawing or specification.

SWL: 1000 kN / 2000 kN → use the specified working load terminology and do not substitute break load or test load.

Chain Grade: Grade 1 / Grade 2 / Grade 3 → final material, heat treatment, and mechanical-property basis are subject to the approved specification.

Nominal Diameter: 54 / 62 / 76 / 90 / 111 mm → selected together with grade, SWL, stopper geometry, and fairlead clearance.

Construction: Welded chain → link dimensions, length, end links, and accessories are to be confirmed by drawing.

How It Works

SPM hawser tension → Hawser end fitting → Chafing chain through tanker bow chock / fairlead → Compatible chain stopper → Vessel bow mooring structure

Applications

Single point mooring buoy terminals | Conventional tanker bow mooring | Offshore loading and offtake operations | SPM hawser assemblies | Newbuilding tanker bow arrangements | Replacement of worn chafing-chain assemblies

FAQ

Q1: Is this chafing chain a towing chain for tug or ship-towing service?

A1: No. It is the tanker-end chain section of an SPM hawser assembly, protecting the synthetic hawser at the bow lead and engaging the ship’s chain stopper. Towing service requires a separate approved specification.

Q2: Can the chain be selected only by the 1000 kN or 2000 kN SWL?

A2: No. Check SWL, grade, diameter, Type A / Type B, chain length, end fittings, fairlead clearance, and chain-stopper compatibility as one system.

Q3: What information is required before quotation?

A3: Provide the applicable specification, vessel DWT, SWL, Type A / Type B, grade, diameter, length, link and end-fitting drawing, stopper details, test / certificate scope, quantity, destination, and delivery schedule.
